What to do after you get a BACKHANDED compliment ~Part 2~

Welcome to part 2 of receiving backhanded compliments. You can catch part 1 by clicking the following link. Was that a backhanded compliment?

If you have received a backhanded compliment before, you probably felt like knocking the person who gave it out. Your feelings in that moment are valid and understandable.

However, in the grand scheme of things, following the suggestions below would be best.

Well, it will keep you out of jail, at least!

Here’s a roadmap to navigate backhanded compliments:

1. Stay Calm: It’s crucial to take a deep breath and remain composed. Reacting in the heat of the moment could lead to an emotional outburst, which is not the desired outcome.

2. Consider the Context: Try to understand the person’s perspective. They might not have intended to be hurtful. Sometimes, people make comments without realizing their implications.

3. Respond with Humor: If the situation allows, a light-hearted joke can be a powerful tool. It not only defuses the tension but also shows that you’re not offended, which can lighten the mood.

4. Seek Clarification: Politely ask for clarification on what they meant. This can make them reconsider their words and lead to a more genuine conversation.

5. Set Boundaries: If backhanded compliments are a pattern for someone, it might be worth addressing directly. Let them know how their comments affect you.

6. Shift the Focus: You could redirect the conversation to a more positive topic, which can help avoid further negativity.

7. Let it Go: Sometimes, it might be best to brush it off. Not every comment deserves your energy.

8. Reflect on it Later: Think about why the comment affected you. It can help to understand your feelings and build resilience against similar remarks in the future.

How you respond is entirely your business. You have the power to handle the situation in a way that feels right for you. Your response, whatever it may be, is valid and should be respected. Remember, you are in control of your reactions.

  1. Great advice, Belladonna. I especially like #4 Seek clarification and #7 Let it go. Seek clarification – I find that often times when seeking clarification, people tend to back peddle and seldom do they actually stick to their words. I do however believe that clarification is essential. Let it go – If they are giving backhanded compliments they are sure to have issues and their issues should not weigh down our lives. Wonderful post. Love it💕

  2. I think I am in favour of solution 7 and 8. As you say, not every remark deserves our energy, especially if it is from a stranger or not so near acquaintance. (Why is there an exta “c” in acquaintance?)

With friends I would bring it up if it happens more often.
