I Am Whatever You Say I Am

Learning to handle a situation like a grown-up can be challenging.

Invariably fighting to not have the last word is a struggle for many people, including me. If I feel like I’m being attacked with your thoughts of me, then I automatically feel the need to protect myself and explain.

The explanation usually consists of me telling you why you shouldn’t feel the way you feel about me. Truth be told, I USE to be guilty of wanting to be liked.

That doesn’t mean I would let someone run all over me and treat me like crap. But I would try to remain neutral and speak to everyone.

Then there is my husband…..

He has a more rugged approach to dealing with life and not feeling the need to explain himself to someone that means very little to him.

His famous words are quoted from Eminem the great,

“I am whatever you say I am, if I wasn’t, why would you say I am.”

So in the spirit of that, I want as many people that I can get to adopt this way of life.

We exhaust so much of our energy and our pure existence into how people characterize us. Time is lost, and we have nothing to show for it. And in the end, someone’s opinion of you will not make or break you.

We can only make or break ourselves.

Every day we come in contact with 1000’s of people and each one of them will think something different about you. They will judge you without knowing who you are. Before you even open your mouth, they have an opinion about you. They have already decided what category to put you in and have determined who they think you are.

And so what! Let them think and allow them to carry this false narrative of you. You don’t owe anyone an explanation about anything that pertains to you.

Repeat after me

I am whatever you say I am, if I wasn’t, then why would you say I am.

Then laugh and walk away!

  1. I love, love, love this! Before your illustration, I’d forgotten about the words to that song and what they mean. Not that I didn’t realize Eminem is deep, but you sort of brought it to life!

  2. Hmmm …. weird. I posted a comment about 20mins ago under a comment from 2019 – both have since disappeared or my coffee isn’t strong enough!!

This is a great point you make! It can be hard to set aside ego at times but that is just what we need to do sometimes and not sweat the small stuff!

And Geez, Eminem reminds me of someone but I can’t think who??

    1. Oh that’s weird!!! What the heck is word press up to now.

Yes Ego is a killer and prevents you from finding peace. So glad that I can just walk away and say “yeah okay” and then walk away😁

I wonder who he reminds you of. Let me know when you think of it.

      1. It is a weird one isn’t it? Somehow we grow up thinking that ego is important and to always be ‘right’. But once you get a bit older you realise its all BS and that once you can control the power of your ego, you free yourself.

  3. Yes!! Although it’s easier to say then to put it into action. Lol I know that I usually feel hurt that someone has a bad impression, but then after I think about it excessively I say oh, well that’s not me. 😆

  4. This is perfect and powerful. On e of those few things that I truly wish I had learned earlier than ever. I loved repeating that sentence with you. It is so good.

  5. Amen on this! You said it, girl! Sadly, it usually takes years of trial and error before we realize these truths and some people never learn. When we stop caring what others think, we experience true freedom!
