Does constant heartache make you numb?

I’ve thought about this question for so many years, and right when I feel I have the answer, I change my mind. One of my favorite quotes comes to mind whenever I ponder this question.

“If you prick us, do we not bleed?

If you tickle us, do we not laugh?

If you poison us, do we not die?

If you wrong us, shall we not revenge”?

We are living souls. Therefore, we can only take so much before breaking or appearing broken. And after we break/crack, we have to heal. Sometimes healing is the most challenging piece in the equation. It takes time, energy, and positive talks, and most likely, many tears will be shed during the process.

Then right when you feel somewhat normal…Grief rears its ugly face once again and pricks you when you least expect it. And there you are, starting this pathetic healing process all over again. I like to call it a “mind fuck”; an explanation is unnecessary.

But when that prick happens over and over again, it feels like your body turns cold. It can be steadfast against a windstorm that has the ability to blow a roof of a home that has stood against the test of time. From the outside looking in, you appear cold and heartless, but in reality, the thought of letting someone back in your life that tortures your soul with one single prick is not an option or a risk worth taking.

If you prick me, I’ll bleed and choke you out

If you tickle me, I’ll frown and punch you

If you poison me, I’ll stab you as I fall

If you wrong me, I’ll forget you ever lived

Once a prick, always a prick!
