The Caitlyn Clark Wave Is Taking Over

And I’m not mad about it!

The social media sphere is buzzing with the controversy surrounding Caitlyn Clark and her eight-year, 28-million-dollar shoe deal. This issue has brought to light a broader concern about perceived disparity in the treatment of WNBA players, both past and present. For instance, only a handful of WNBA players, regardless of their race, have secured such lucrative shoe deals, raising questions about the fairness of these arrangements. 

Questions being asked by WNBA (old and new players)

  1. Does She have what it takes to make it in the WNBA, or is she overhyped? 
  2. Why are there only white WNBA players with shoe deals
  3. Is she getting all this media attention because she’s white
  4. She hasn’t won a college championship, so why is she the GOAT

Facts matter, so here you go!

Caitlyn has indeed brought flare, excitement, and notoriety to college basketball. She puts BUTTS in seats and sells out arenas. Every team Iwoa played against last year attracted a crowd that resulted in a sold-out stadium. Furthermore, Iwoa’s championship games broke viewership records with a whopping 18.9 million views and peaked at 24 million during the final minutes of the game.

We can debate this topic and say Caitlyn wasn’t the only person people wanted to see. Of course, you would be right, but she is the person who moved the needle and made people want to watch the game.

Now, who you choose to root for is up to you, but let us recognize who moved the needle. We can’t be blind to the fact that this lady from Iwoaa and her three-point shot shook the nation. She brought new viewers who once laughed at the lady’s sports or flat-out ignored them.

I, for one, am thankful that the needle has moved, so our little girls can now take advantage of the Catliyn Clark wave.

  4. oh yeah….but that needle has to be pushed even further, and more respect….it’s good to see women in sports is getting more coverage and attention, basketball, now hockey they’re putting butts in seats…but….it’s still way too focused on looks. what was done to women runners at the Oregon Project is the worst example of that, and Nike, I’m not a fan because of that

  8. I just googled WNBA players with shoe deals from before Caitlyn: out of 12, only half of them were white, Basket ball is not as big in Denmark, like for example tennis. If she is that gifted, let her get the credit and make some money as long as she can. Sports people’s season doesn’t last forever.
    Money rules everything, does it not? Look at the election process for presidents.

  10. Great perspective Belladonna. I love sports of all kinds, but it was interesting to see the interest that my wife and I took into this year’s Women’s Tournament. I’m a big fan of Dawn Staley, but it was interesting to see how much my wife, who likes sports, but doesn’t always like watching it on TV, took in the final four. It was must see TV. There’s no question that Clark’s name brought butts to the seats. My hope is that she and the rest of the league will benefit.

    1. It was an exciting time!!!! I was rooting for so many ladies 🤣🤣🤣 and all different teams. I was just pumped to watch!
      Clark is what we needed and I pray this sport stays uplifted so the women can ALL GET PAID 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

      1. I feel like I waffle on the money thing. On one hand, the business person in me says that the WNBA can only pay out what it’s bringing in and that it’s a team game. You need everyone to make up a team. However, the cynic in me is going off like a fire detector. I find it hard to believe that the WNBA teams are making so little that the average is anywhere from $78,000 to the low 100s. (I see different averages listed.) It makes me think that someone is making some nice money and keeping it from the players. Like you, my hope in the end is that the focus on Caitlin helps all the players and the product on the floor. The women’s game is definitely more fun to watch, lots more ball movement, and more defense.

      2. I know if more women supported this sport then the money would be there, but sadly we don’t. Hopefully the excitement of the nrw ladies will bring about major change. I know one thing for sure, I will be at the games this year!

  11. I don’t pay attention to sports at all, but I’ve been hearing her name on every podcast I listen to and seeing it on blogs unrelated to sports! Go Caitlyn; even if I couldn’t care less about basketball I think it’s great that WNBA players might start getting more of what they deserve.
