Uncut collard greens are the only way to go!

It’s super easy and delicious. Grab your knife and bowl, and let’s get into the kitchen to cook up the best greens you ever had.
Okay, go, Grab
- Fresh collards
- Turkey wing or ham hocks
- Onion
- Vinegar
- Sugar
- Pepper
- Season salt ( I love Lawyrs)
- Chicken Broth or Bone Broth ( NO WATER)
Let’s get started
- Break the steam off the greens
- Stack your greens according to size and cut
- Roll your greens and slice
- Place in a large bowl and wash them with warm water; rinse and repeat a few times
Cooking the greens
- Boil the Turkey wing or ham hock in 4 cups of seasoned broth until the meat is tender
- Add the cleaned collards and a little more pepper and seasoning.
- After cooked down on medium heat, add diced onions.
- Lastly, add 1/4 cup of sugar and cook it down on medium heat.
- If needed, add more broth so your geens aren’t dry
Don’t nobody want to eat some dry greens.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Where is the cutting board for those beautiful countertops?! They look almost similar to mine. Lol.
I just cooked my greens down some. I’ll warm them up tomorrow and let them finish.
I use Roma tomatoes and onions in mine and various spices (and vinegar & olive oil). I typically pan fry, then steam them.
My best friend’s stepmother (she is Kenyan) taught me how to make them like that, and I never looked back. Lol!

We call them Sukuma Wiki meaning push the week because they literally help push the week through. Its a common food for most part of the week, it goes with another meal called Ugali.

Have Yourself a Merry little Christmas🤶
Your kids got jokes‼️ Great idea for removing the stems…I generally give my kids the stemming/washing job, but I think I might try this. Thanks😘

Removing the stems like this goes by quickly and I don’t know why I think it’s so much fun.

I tend to use ham better than broth, like I use for beans, also i use bacon grease. But we also like kale, mustard and turnip greens as well. Mustard greens you dont want to cook as long though cause they are already tender as it is, so its hard to get them to hold the flavor so much. Regardless collard are awesome especially if after you get them in your plate l, twist a lemon slice over them. That tartness really brings out the flavor.

Yes Collards are my favorite. I’ve cooked all types but nothing like a good plate of collards.

I’m not much of a fan but I’ve eaten turnip greens. I wish I could taste your collards…I love how you cut the greens just like I cut romaine lettuce! I hate the stems! Are collards bitter like turnip greens?

Thank you so much Kim, I would love for you to taste these so I could see what you think.
Collards aren’t bitter and that’s why I’m not a huge fan of turnips. Some folks mix the two but I’m not a fan of that.
Cutting them like this is so much fun.

Your recipe seems delicious. I tried cooking it once but was unsuccessful. How long do you have to cook it before it softens? Why do you add the sugar?

Heey Beverly, I cook the seasoned turkey wings in broth on medium heat for about an hour and then add my greens. The sugar brings all the flavors together and maes them sweet and savory.

That sounds great. I will try it.

That’s okay, only one person in the relationship has to be the kitchen type and the other person can bee the clean up crew. LOL

Thanks for sharing your recipe. As a vegetarian, I only use vegetable broth. I’ve never added sugar to mine. Will give it a try 🙂

It’s been so long since I had some Collards…smh. My wife grew up down south, so turnips were the stable. Every now and then she’d mixed a little Mustards in there. This post brings back memories.

Turnips are great as well! I grew up on collards so I’m most confident at making those. LOL
