It’s factual to say that every love story has a beginning and an end. I would like to say that all love stories are beautiful, but I simply can not. But there is something about a ghetto love story that wins my heart.….
They had crossed paths a few times and didn’t know it.
Until they did.
And when they did, sparks flew, and their souls united. Their connection was instant. Year one of dating felt like year 10 but in a good way. When she spoke, her words were familiar, and her touch was recognized by every fiber in his being.
His skin had awaited her touch.
They sat on the phone for hours at a time. He told her that he would love to be able to take her somewhere extravagant for dinner. He spoke of this dress that he saw, and he knew that it would compliment her curves and touch her in places that would make any man do a double-take.
She would often stop him and say, “one day maybe, but today we can cook and enjoy each other’s company at my place.”
He knew how she enjoyed eating outdoors, so one day, he went into her tiny kitchen that could only fit one person at a time. He pulled out her oven rack and 4 large cans. He went outside and arranged the cans and coal on a small bed of dirt outside her door. He lit a small fire and placed the oven rack on top.
He poured her a cheap glass of wine as he cooked their meal. They laughed and said one day we will be able to afford a grill.
He turned to her and said, “how would you like to play a game of checkers.”
She shyly said, “I’m sorry, but I don’t have any games, nor can I afford to buy any”
He said, “no problem, we can make one.”
He went into her notebook, took out a few pieces of paper, and began to cut out circular pieces. He handed the pieces to her and asked if she could start coloring some red and the others black while he designed the checkerboard.
They sat playing a homemade game of checkers while sipping cheap wine and eating grilled food made from an oven rack and 4 cans.
A stranger may look at them and think their setup looks quite ghetto and then feel sorry for them. But not me, there’s something about ghetto love that pulls my heartstrings and makes me FEEL!
You could have chosen any blog to read, but you chose mine, and I’m honored!

yes there is…. The struggle to be with all the chaos surrounding them and the declaration that their love will not fail to overcome… Your post is beautifully written and felt by this poet
Thank you!!!!! That means so much. I always think about James and Florida Evan’s and their love. No money, 2 bedroom apartment, in the ghetto but the affection and love made you feel good. Ghetto love for the win!
you are welcome!
💗💗💗💗
This is so deeply beautiful – true meaning of love depicted so beautifully. With that kind of soul recognition nothing else matters, it keeps creating beauty and joy.
Thank you!!!! Yes loving someone for who they are and what they currently have is key. Money will not make the love last nor make it true. Thank you for your beautiful words♥️
You are very welcome. I agree with you.
