It’s been 34 years, 4 months, and 1 day since the last time I made breakfast for someone and delivered it to them while they were in bed. Not that I’m counting.
I was 10 years old and happily bouncing around in the kitchen, preparing a feast!
Yep.. you guessed it, I was throwing down on toast, eggs, and coffee. To 10 year old me, that was going above and beyond the call of duty. Plus, that’s all I was allowed to make or able to… now that I think about it. It was my dad’s birthday, and I wanted to surprise him, so I rushed to put the half-cooked eggs on the plate along with a half-eaten piece of toast. Unfortunately for my dad, my hunger kicked in while I was making his coffee.
I finished up by putting not one but three tablespoons of sugar and enough cream to last him a lifetime. I then marched towards his door and had to kick it open since my hands were full. I kicked it a little too hard and the door slammed against the door stopper and came swinging back towards me. I didn’t move quick enough so a little coffee flew out and onto my face and on the carpet.
My dad was up and looked at me and smiled. I love his smile; he has the biggest dimples. He should smile more. He reached out and slowly took his plate and his coffee. His face was a little puzzled when he saw the toast, and he laughed.
I did too!
It wasn’t a secret that I have always been a little greedy.
He sipped his coffee, and with a slight hesitation, he let out an “Mmmmm” followed with “delicious.” It wasn’t until I was in my 20’s when I learned my dad likes his coffee black.
Well, the dry spell finally ended yesterday when I made my (birthday boy) husband breakfast and woke him up with a feast! The look on his face was more than worth the hour it took me to pull this off. His first words to me were,
“Are you kidding me,”
“I can’t believe you got up so early to do this.”
But this time, I made a couple of changes: I left the coffee black, nibbled on my own breakfast, and slowly pushed the door open with my back.
I think I’ll really have this nailed in another 34 years, 4 months, and 1 day.
You could have chosen any blog to read, but you chose mine, and I’m honored!
