It’s hard to be a woman. Many have tried, and many have failed!
If you want to be a woman of substance and strength, then you have to be willing to put yourself out there and fear nothing! When you walk into the room, you have to own it.
Confidence is how you win.
I remember when I was in my 20’s, I started a dance program for young girls. We talked about self-esteem all the time. Having them be aware of their strength will direct their lives in a path that they created. I wanted them to be bold and not afraid to take up space. When we danced, I would have one girl at a time, perform a piece, and I urged them to use the entire stage.
They would pretend that the stage was the earth, and no part of the planet is off-limits. They are the ruler and Queens have full range of the land.
Every time I said that I would see a sparkle in their eye. They would automatically roll their shoulders back and, their necks would grow an extra inch. All I would see was noses high in the air and a proud chest.
When they began to move, they would become one with the music, and every inch of my stage was blessed with their presence.
At the end of class, I would tell them to tell me why they are brilliant and what makes them so excellent at everything they choose to do?
I would sit there on the ground Indian style with my full attention on the dancer that was speaking. When they were done, I told them to hold on to that feeling and think back to this moment when they’re feeling defeated. Then take up space!
It took me years to feel confident enough to claim my stage.
I would torture my soul, and I only stood in familiar territories. Not bold enough to enter into the unknown. Oddly I would rather be unhappy in a place that was old to my vision rather than to attempt to venture into a world that wasn’t my own.
Because of that, my want for women to feel as if all ground is familiar ground is tenacious.
So don’t just stand there
Take up space
Now Dance!
