You Were A Phone Call Away

I remember when my husband first started working from home, and it was difficult for him to know when to shut down his workload. He was used to coming home from the office at 6:30 and completely shutting down from work and geared up for family time.

For 14 years, this was his life, and then BOOM, he was allowed to work in the comfort of his own home. He grabbed this chance and ran. Being able to work from home meant that he would be free from all the crazy traffic and that would free up 2 hours each day.

But what really happened was!!!!!

He found himself working a tad bit more and finding it hard to get out of his office and leave work alone.

The kids and I started to get frustrated and were ready to throw him out to the wolves. But we found a better way to deal with the issue. I picked up the phone and called the one person that could whip this man into shape.

Grandma Byrum came to the rescue…

As soon as she answered the phone, I blurted out, “Your grandson is having a difficult time clocking out and closing his office doors at a reasonable hour, and I’m getting really frustrated.”

She immediately said, “what is a good time for me to call him and give him an ear full.” Without hesitation, I said, “call him first thing in the morning so that he will have the whole day to reflect on your conversation.”

The next morning the phone rang, and he answered it. He went to his office and closed the door. When he came out, I tried so hard to keep a straight face because he all of a sudden realized that he was working way too much, and he said he was determined to make a change today.

For years I never said a word about her and I working together on this plan. It was just one of our many secrets.

Over the years, I went to her for so many things. I enjoyed her company and her wisdom.

The first time I met her she gave me the biggest hug and we sat in my husband’s back yard and talked for a long while. Our conversation was easy and it felt like I’d known her my whole life.

We liked each other from the start, and I knew that she loved me as much as I loved her.

She listened like no other.

She was a protector

She was a fighter

She was one phone call away…..

You could have chosen to read any blog, but you chose mine, and I’m honored!
